Jesse Kertesz-Knight Awarded 2022 Dee Read Memorial Athletic Award
Alberta Alpine and the Read Family are pleased to announce Jesse Kertesz-Knight (Banff Alpine Racers/Jasper Ski Club) as the recipient of the 2022 Dee Read Memorial Athletic Award.
The purpose of the award is to assist an Alberta Ski Team athlete whose goal is to represent Alberta and Canada at the highest levels of international competition. This annual award is named in honour of Dee Read, an athlete, leader and official who loved ski racing and teaching people about the joys of our amazing mountains. She instilled this love in her family and hundreds of others who worked closely with her over a half century of involvement with Canadian alpine ski racing.
“Jesse is a dedicated and hard-working athlete that is always striving to achieve and exceed his goals. A testament to his drive is the 7 FIS wins and 5 other FIS podium results he secured this season. Beyond strict athletics he is a devoted teammate that everyone enjoys being around. When you find him on the hill he is always smiling and happy to lend a hand to competitors, coaches, and teammates alike.” -Josh Benge, AASA Athletic Director
“We know how hard our athletes work to be named to the Alberta Ski Team. We also know how much support must come from the family of every athlete” said Ken Read. “It’s a journey with many rewards, excitement and friendships, but it also requires gaining experience, patience and a determined focus to be successful. These are important qualities that can also serve as the tools for success beyond sport as well. My mother always recognized the need for family support and the amazing qualities our sport gives our athletes – and she was a life-long believer in the benefits of alpine ski racing in young people.”
“Jesse has shown great leadership qualities in his first year with the Alberta Ski Team. He has also performed at the Nor-Am and Canadian Championship level and we are pleased to support his dream of representing his province and his country at the highest levels,” -Ken Read
“I am extremely honored and thankful to have been selected for the Dee Read scholarship. The Read ski racing family has been such an inspiration to me and the financial assistance provided by this scholarship is very much appreciated. I am extremely excited to work hard during summer training and am pumped for next season.” -Jesse Kertesz-Knight
About the Dee Read Memorial Award
Since 1988 the Read Family Scholarships have supported young athletes who show both a passion for the sport and who aspire to represent Canada at the highest level. Dee Read was a Canadian Champion as an athlete (1948 Downhill and Combined) and went on to be a coach, volunteer, official and a dedicated ski racing parent. She was a ground-breaking leader as one of the first female FIS Technical Delegates and served as the Chair of Alberta Alpine and the Board of Alpine Canada. Her commitment reached far beyond her family to influence athletes, parents, coaches and sport administrators right across Canada, who benefited from her knowledge, generosity and warm spirit in lending a firm but insightful hand as a sport leader in Alberta and Canada. In 2001, Dee Read was inducted into the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame as a sport builder. To Dee, it was always about supporting athletes.

Cary Mullen Character Award and Certificate Winners
Congratulations to all Cary Mullen Character Award and Certificate Winners!
You have all displayed the qualities of true champions in your ski racing pursuits: Courage, Commitment, Confidence and Camaraderie.
U12 Award Winners:
Ellie Hyndman
Commitment/ Camaraderie – “Ellie gives 110% to anything she sets her mind to! Ellie works hard at ski racing but also competes in swimming and sings in a choir. She does an amazing job of combining activities and school commitments. Ellie will always cheer on her teammates, encourage them to try something outside their comfort zone or just look out for her buddies. She is an integral part of team, who has a hugely positive influence wherever she goes!”
Veda Menzies
Commitment/ Confidence – “When we have a race on Sunday morning even though she is tired she still wants to go to training that day after the race. She said she will go to every race, and she did. Veda will not miss any awards even when no one from our club wins anything because you are supposed to cheer for everyone. Veda knew that she needed to move to a better group even though she liked her coach and kids in her group. She wasn’t nervous to train with all second-year boys that were all really good friends already even though she is a first year U12.”
U14/16 Award Winners:
Cole Merrett
Camaraderie – “Even through all of his efforts, Cole is never cold to a team-mate and is always fundamentally congratulatory to his opponents. This year, he was selected as an alternate for U16 nationals (which, as a first year, is a notable accomplishment). Seven people on Team Panorama were selected to actually compete, and he was expressing his desire for them to succeed immediately, as well as consoling the people who were disappointed with their failure to qualify.”
Reighynn Pawlowski
Confidence – “This year was the Breakthrough year that she was striving for. With the support of her coaches, and fellow racers, Reighynn was able to start seeing her hidden potential. While racing the regional series, she first experienced back-to-back races on the podium and realized that her abilities were the foundation of her success and not just a fluke. As she started to climb the steps of the podium, her self-confidence started building”
FIS/AST Award Winners:
Phil Tremblay
Commitment – “Phil made personal gains this year on the hill and in his professionalism in the sport, his skiing skills improved and provided him with his first NorAm win and qualifying in a Europa Cup. He also presented himself as a professional athlete in his mannerism, interaction with the Canadian National Ski Cross Team, the Italian National Ski Cross Team, and other National teams. This sportsmanship helped to build relationships to get the Alberta Ski Cross Team time on European tracks”
Garrett Musgrave
Courage – “Garrett had taken some time off from ski cross to pursue school and to compete in football at the University level. After 2 years, he decided that he wanted to return to ski cross. This is something that would be intimidating to lots of athletes, but Garrett came back prepared to put the work in to return to where he was when he last raced and to surpass his goals. The courage he had to return to a high level of sport after time off is inspiring and goes to show “retirement” doesn’t have to be the end for an athlete. Garrett not only came back but returned stronger than ever both physically and mentally from his time in a different sport.”
Congratulations to all other nominees who will receive the Cary Mullen Certificate acknowledging your nominations:
- Shae O’Brien
- Alicia Frick
- Emma Fynn
- Annabelle Iverson
- Thomas Binley-Ewing
- Ramius Aspen

U14 Series Finals….A Success!
Despite April weather offering a sample of all 4 seasons, the U14 athletes finished their ski season with a number of personal bests, a handful of medals/ribbons, and ear-to-ear grins throughout a successful race series at Panorama Mountain Resort.
In addition to Panorama’s own Cassidy Gray (Canadian National Women’s Alpine Ski Team) providing an inspirational message while handing out awards, the athletes were treated to festival-like environment with live music, popcorn and Powerade, while meeting new friends in both the resort pools and ski hill wide game of “man-tracker”.
A special congratulations to the U14 Finals Series winners Alex Madra (FAST) and Eric Ward (PANO) as well as all the athletes who persevered over 3 days of racing.
We’d also like to thank the events title sponsors CF Construction and Volker Stevin, as well as Genstar Developments for sponsoring the U14 Finals hats! The series was also supported by Anthem United, Kal Tire, KIDCO, Excel Homes, Marmot Construction, RGO, and Scotia Wealth Management.
AASA wants to thank Team Panorama, the ROC, all the volunteers, coaches and Panorama Mountain Resort for putting on such a great event.
Congratulations to all the athletes and we wish you all best in the off-season.
