Sunridge Alpine Ski Team hosted western Canada’s first ever Nancy Greene Ski League Ski Cross event, the Smile for Cam Nancy Greene Ski Cross race February 3-4, 2018. Despite being -33 with the wind chill in the morning, the event went on with training on Saturday and races on Sunday and was a great opportunity to introduce young racers to the Ski Cross discipline and to promote fun and participation. All U8, U10, and U12 North Zone racers were welcome to come, try out a four-athlete start gate, and have fun.
Ski Cross is a fairly new addition to the sport of alpine skiing, incorporating principles like jumps and head-to-head racing. In recent years we have hosted Kinder-Kombi NGSL races but this season AASA suggested we try out a Ski Cross format in an effort to expose younger athletes to the discipline. The race course included a beginner start feature with a smaller-scale Wu-Tang to allow for separation of athletes out of the gate but without having to worry about getting too “sendy”. Unlike our usual Kinder-Kombis or Western SX Series LCQ formats, our NGSL SX race format was a team event, counting runs for points; each racer had 2 runs in pre-set heats of 4 racers. The format of the race allowed every athlete to race twice competing for their team and so pushing from fourth to third in a heat would still help their team. The race ran smoothly and finished earlier than expected even with the harsh weather. This was a true indication of our ski family pulling together for all the athletes.
Bringing/introducing Ski Cross racing to the Nancy Greene Ski League and incorporating the discipline into traditional alpine ski racing programs is a big win in our books.
