Canmore, AB – This week, based on the recommendation of Alberta Alpine staff, the Board of Directors of Alberta Alpine achieved a major milestone that is consistent with and delivers upon, the visions outlined in our 2018/21 Strategic Plan, by approving the creation of the Alberta Ski Cross Team (ASXT).
The ASXT will fill a currently vacant step in the athlete pathway in the discipline of Ski Cross, by formalizing a provincial high-performance, centralized team of athletes who are striving for higher levels in the sport. The mandate of this team will be to elevate athletes to the National Ski Cross C-Team, with support and collaboration from Canada Ski Cross throughout that journey. Alberta Alpine is working with Canada Ski Cross staff and coaches to create the program for this team and launch the programming as soon as possible to ensure minimal athlete disruption.
Alberta Alpine is expecting to nominate athletes to this team within the next ten days. Athletes have been recommended to the team based on the performance criteria created and utilized by Canada Ski Cross at the 2019 CSX Talent ID Camp at Sunshine Village. The High-Performance Committee of Alberta Alpine has approved the use of these criteria for the 2019/20 ASXT.
It is the intention of Alberta Alpine that the program will begin as soon as possible, and athletes will be integrated into testing and training at Alberta Alpine’s high-performance training partner, CSI Calgary.
The on-snow elements of the team will begin this fall with camps before on-course training begins in December at Canyon Ski Resort in Red Deer, AB, utilizing the facilities developed for the 2019 Canada Winter Games.
The race season will be busy with NorAm events planned for Maine, Colorado, and Ontario.
Of note, there will also be multiple NorAm events this season in the Alberta region. A NorAm will be held in early January at Canyon Ski Resort just prior to the 2020 Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup at Nakiska Ski Area, Kananaskis, AB. A second NorAm is scheduled to follow the World Cup events. There will also be a NorAm event accompanying Canada National Championships late in the season.
Alberta Alpine is committed to supporting every athlete in the organization, and in the high-performance pathway, we are confident the establishment of the ASXT will provide support and opportunity that will positively impact development for athletes seeking to represent Canada on the world stage in Ski Cross. We are also encouraged by the collaborative training opportunities this team will be exposed to, both with the Alberta Alpine Ski Team (AST), and Canada Ski Cross Europa Cup Team.
Further information will be provided in the coming days, and we look forward to welcoming our first team of nominated athletes to the new ASXT!
