After a luxurious World Cup experience in the athlete’s village at the Pomeroy in Kananaskis village for the first half of the Canada Games, our athletes had the opportunity to experience the games Red Deer style. While luxury may not be the first word used to describe the athlete’s village, it did offer them a traditional games experience and one they will remember for the rest of their lives.

A huge shout out and thank you must go out to Canyon Ski Resort and the ROC for the ski cross as they did an outstanding job playing host to all and put on a great show. There was doubt and hesitation from all over Canada with regards to the athletes racing the ski cross as over 90% of the athletes had little to no ski cross experience.

Once everyone saw the appropriate track build and the athletes had the opportunity to run it, all hesitant minds were put at ease and it was time to experience ski cross. Despite the deep freeze, stoke levels were high and stress levels were down in an environment that offered athletic development and fun for all.

While we were unable to walk away with a championship at these games we did come away with 5 Silver and 3 bronze medals and showcased the talent we have in the province. The talent in Alberta goes well beyond the athletes that were a part of the Canada Games, moving forward I believe effort is the key ingredient as we continue towards our goal of being the best.

Skill x Effort = Talent

Talent x Effort = Achievement
