Canmore, AB – It is with great excitement that Alberta Alpine announces two new additions to the coaching staff for the 2018-19 Alberta Ski Team. Joining Head Coach Darin McBeath are Leslie Firstbrook and Jonas Haehlen, who both bring a fresh perspective to an Alberta Ski Team committed to rebuilding, and promoting high-performance success and a strong, supportive team culture.

 

Leslie Firstbrook comes with a solid skiing background, having skied with the Ontario Ski Team from 2003-2006.  She knows and understands high-level competition as well as high-performance progression, having coached from U10 through to FIS over the past 12 years.  Many athletes Leslie has coached have gone on to reach Provincial and National Teams.

Leslie has a Kinesiology and Physical Education Degree from Wilfred Laurier University, as well as a Sport Business Management Graduate Certificate from Durham College, and is a CSCF Performance Level Certified Coach. She is also in the process of completing her Advanced Coaching Diploma at Winsport Winter Sport Institute. Leslie is a driven life long learner and a passionate ski racing fan.

 

Jonas Haehlen grew up racing for the Westcastle Ski Club, and would go to compete for four years on the Alberta Ski Team. He transitioned to coaching, and coached with both the Calgary Alpine Racing Club and Banff Alpine Racers. Jonas not only understands what it takes to compete at the high-performance provincial team level, he also understands the dedication and commitment that goes into all aspect of ski racing, and is passionate to assist athletes in the pursuit of their personal goals and objectives.

Jonas has a Bachelor of Health and Physical Education from Mount Royal University, where he received multiple recognitions for high academic performance, and is CSCF Performance Level Certified Coach, as well as being CSIA Level 2 Certified Instructor, and has completed several National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) specialty courses.

 

Alberta Alpine President Rob McCloskey commented, “I believe we have an incredible team of coaches to lead the Alberta Ski Team into the 2018-19 season. Our athletes are excited, and I’m thrilled to support this team and watch them grow and bond as a group. I believe that these coaches will flourish under the vision of Head Coach Darin McBeath, and will build excellent rapport with the athletes, as well as with other coaches and clubs in the Alberta Alpine system and beyond. This coaching group will encouraged develop the culture and high-performance results we are looking to have at the Alberta Ski Team.”

Firstbrook will begin full-time with the Alberta Ski Team on August 1st, but will attend a July training camp at Mt. Hood along with McBeath. Haehlen will join the team full-time on September 15th in advance of fall training camps.
