The crew just returned from a awesome weekend spent in Edmonton for the Ski The North event. The first day things looked fairly bleak as it was -35 with wind-chill and Rabbit Hill was closed for the day. Fortunately, they opened the hill just for us and we spent the afternoon lapping a couple of slalom courses with a great group of kids. It was a ton of fun to just goof around with the kids and get creative with the courses. For my last run of the day, I took a lap down the Rabbit Hill Lauberhorn Downhill, which was my first race ever and my first podium. Great memories.
Our next stop was Western GMC where Doug Airey put on a great event with some great food. Here we met some more racing families as well as checked out all the vehicles. Big thanks to Doug for having us and continuing to support our team! Saturday was spent at Snow Valley with a huge group of kids and one epic dual slalom course. We could hardly lap fast enough as there were so many young athletes who wanted to race. Many tight races unfolded which included some of our athletes really going for it to keep up with the young guns. After the action-packed morning, we had a quick bite to eat before a Q&A with athletes and parents. There were lots of great questions and a few laughs had. This weekend was extra special for Carson and I as we are both originally north zone athletes. I know the whole team was incredibly impressed that Carson came from such a small hill and was based out of Snow Valley right until he qualified for AST.
All in all, this weekend was incredibly fulfilling for our crew. We signed a whole bunch of helmets and posters, posed for photos, answered questions and gave pointers. Many of us agreed that this event was probably the coolest thing we’ve had the chance to participate in with the team. We hope this event continues annually and we see more North Zone Athletes on the provincial team in the future!
