Fall Combine

The 2nd edition of the Legends Club Annual Fitness Combine ran October 14th at both the U of A in the North Zone, and SAIT/ Peak Power for the South Zone. Over 110 athletes from several Alberta clubs were put through their paces and even a few coaches. The event ran incredibly smoothly – a big thanks is owed to Peak Power Sport Development and the University of Alberta Testing staffs. All results have been sent to the provinces coaches, and well as are POSTED HERE. With two successful events this year, Alberta Alpine Athletics staff are shifting focus for future years from simply running the event to focusing on data management to develop long term athlete tracking, assisting coaches and parents in understanding and interpreting results, providing incentives to attend, and in developing provincial and national norms and standards. Stay tuned for more information. The 2018 dates should be published in Early April to get it onto your calendars early.

Coach and Officials Education

It has been a busy couple of weeks as we have started to roll out Coach and officials training for the province. We have moved over 30 officials through the ACA level 2 officials programs with the fall Level 3 officials course running this weekend. Registration is still open if you are interested in attending.

Coaching education has been off to a great start with 40 club coaches attending the NCCP Core evaluator training and over 70 coaches having attended our Fall coaches meeting. Coaches attending the fall coaches heard from several great speakers including Leslie Steeves of Grass Roots Nutrition on helping athletes to fuel appropriately, Wayne McNeil of the Respect Group, Kathryn Schneider of the U of C delivering a great concussion update, Mike Souster of Peak Power Sport Development on improving fundamental movement patterns in our athletes, and Dusan Grasic and Jenni Stielow presenting on ACA domestic updates, as well as the new LTAD (long term athlete plan). A Big thanks to all those attending.

Alpine Insurance Alberta Ski Team Update

Happy to report that the Alpine Insurance AST is home safe and sound from Saas Fee. The team completed their second of two major European camps this October in Saas Fee. The second camp saw the team progressing into the first speed training sessions of the year as well pounding out some huge volume with some athletes running up to 4500 gates in the camp. The team is focused on getting rested up, continuing mental toughness training with Shawnee Harle, and back into the gym in preparation for the anticipated November 6th North American Canadian training season opening at Nakiska Ski Area, the official training site of the Alpine Insurance Alberta Ski Team.
