Currently the Alberta Ski Team is preparing to depart for our first training camp of the year over in Saas-Fee, Switzerland and pushing hard for our last week in the gym before we depart. Personally, I believe that this new dryland phase is the hardest one that we have endured. The coaches have put an intensive program in place to get us stronger and fitter this year. I feel this will result in a better and more productive summer camp in Saas-Fee which will lead to better on snow results for the season.
Summer for us is basically non-existent as have been grinding in the gym twice per day since the May long weekend and going to work or school, but we all love the grind and the process. There are so many things to coordinate at this time of year including dryland, preparation for Saas-Fee, equipment orders set-up and prep as well as our team meetings. I can’t wait to get back on the snow and focus on skiing and improving our technique for the coming season. Despite the summer almost being over, we are all extremely excited to get back on snow.
An average summer day for a member of the Alberta Ski Team looks like this:
- wake up at 5:30 (maybe earlier)
- begin dryland at 6:30
- finish at 8:00
- start work/school at 8:30
- return to the gym for 4:00 (sometimes later depending on work)
We have a large team this year and while we said goodbye to some great athletes and terrific team mates and to some wonderful coaches we have welcomed some new motivated ski team members and some new coaches who I am excited to be working with. It should be a great year and we are expecting some strong results when the racing season starts. I am looking forward to working with this group and the bonding that we can expect to occur in Saas-Fee.
Being an Olympic year, there is also the added excitement for the season. Waiting for the Games and watching the events and knowing what “could be” if we continue to work hard and progress. The Winter Olympics are such an exciting event especially for those in our sport but also for other winter sport athletes and generally those of us that live in northern climates.
I hope everyone has had a great summer so far and enjoy the last few weeks. Stay tuned as we provide reports and journals from Saas-Fee.
Thanks for reading and for everybody’s support!
