Canmore, AB – Alberta Alpine is pleased to announce Thedy Brändli has been appointed Head Coach of the Alpine Insurance Alberta Ski Team.
Brändli, a dual citizen of Switzerland and Canada, has raced for both the Canadian and Swiss national alpine ski teams and has an extensive coaching background within the sport. Over the past two seasons, he has been coaching with the Swiss Men’s Europa Cup team which has produced remarkable results including a 2017 World Cup win for Niels Hintermann in Wengen. Prior to that, Brändli coached with Switzerland’s national development team, regional teams and was the technical instructor for the Swiss women’s B and C teams.
Brändli started coaching in the mid 90’s, in Sun Peaks, BC, shortly after retiring from the Canadian Alpine Ski Team. There as an assistant coach within the club, he started working weekends with the K1 (U14) program, skiing and working with a broad range of athletes and abilities. In 2001, an opportunity arose to work in Switzerland where he has been ever since.
An exceptional technical role model with a strong high performance based background, Brändli is both a Canadian and Swiss certified coach. He is a very passionate active sportsman and his enthusiasm for skiing and its people is evident across everything he does.
Alberta Alpine President, Nigel Loring is excited to welcome Brändli back to Canada as head coach of the Alberta Ski Team. “Thedy brings a wealth of international experience and perspective which will be of immense benefit to our developing athletes and coaches throughout the province.” Loring also felt that Brändli has “all the right stuff” to “lead and inspire our next generation of ski racing talent in Alberta.”
Brändli currently lives in Medeglia, Switzerland and will be moving to Canada in the coming weeks. He starts June 1 with the Alpine Insurance Alberta Ski Team, which is currently in selections for next year’s roster.
