In case you missed it, this past weekend marked the 12th anniversary of the Rob Bosinger Memorial Weekend held at  Banff Mount Norquay. The weekend is in memory of Rob Bosinger (a.k.a. Bozo), a well-known provincial (Alberta) and national alpine ski racer and loving friend, husband, son, brother and father. Healthy and fit, Rob died suddenly in his sleep on May 20, 2005, of cardiac arrhythmia at the age of 38, leaving behind his wife Janet and 7-month-old son, Mats.  The weekend features head-to-head racing action during the Bozocup and Kindercup, $10,000 in cash and prizes, crazy costumes and great views of all the action from the beer garden! Money raised from this weekend goes towards two scholarships for Alberta Alpine youth and to support The Canadian Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndromes (SADS) Foundation.

The Saturday morning Bozocup kicked off with a champagne toast to Rob in the finish area followed by five different categories of FIS junior racers, current and past national and provincial team members, coaches, masters’ racers and friends of the ski racing community going head-to-head in an exciting round-robin dual slalom drag race.  The Men’s pro category had the likes of Canadian National team alumni Paul Stutz, Louis-Pierre Helie and current member Brady Leman, up against young talented FIS racers including Adrien Grabinski, Luka Bozinovski and Ben Legree. The “old boys” managed to hang on to the title with Stutz, dressed head to toe in a snake-skin cowboy costume taking the first-place prize. It was the opposite case on the Ladies side with three young FIS athletes dominating the podium. Isla Hawkins took first place followed by Molly Wallace in second and Claire Timmermann in third. The day didn’t end with the race. The Bozocup Cup After Party and Silent Auction took place upstairs in the Lone Pine. This year’s auction items included 3 Peter Wyse Race Day prints along with some other great prizes.

Sunday morning came early, and the Banff Mount Norquay Main Lodge was buzzing with excitement. It was Kindercup day, meaning it was the U14 and U16 athletes turn. The weather couldn’t seem to make up it’s mind as we had a little bit of everything. In the end the sun came out and it was a great day of racing. New last year was the added “Best Costume” which resulted in three Gorillas, one crazy Banana and a lot of other whacky outfits making their way down the course. This year marked the first year Rob’s son, Mats from the Whistler Mountain Ski Club was able to compete in the Kindercup as a first year U14. He made it all the way to the semi-finals before getting knocked out by Banff Alpine Racer Collin Mills.

It was a family affair this weekend with Rob’s sister Anna, wife Janet, older brother Pete and parents Fred and Margaret all there to celebrate Rob. Fred and Margaret handed out the prizes during awards, also awarding the two recipients of the Rob Bosinger Scholarships their $2,500 cheques. The winners of the scholarship are U16 ski racers who exemplify the qualities that Rob stood for: passion for the sport, ambition and courage, combined with talent and accomplishment in pursuit of excellence in ski racing in Alberta. Congratulations to Daniel Harrison and Tora Hoshizaki of the Kananaskis Alpine Ski Team on this achievement.

Thank you to the crew, volunteers, our partners and of course the awesome racers who helped make the Rob Bosinger Memorial Weekend a huge success! See you next year!
