Canmore, AB-  2017 marks the return to U16 Nationals after a 6-year hiatus since the event was last run as K2 nationals. The return of the event will see athletes from across Canada gathering in Thunder Bay, Ontario to race on the Giant at the Loch Lomond Ski Area. Although short on vertical the championship event will be action packed with athletes racing Super-G (in two run format), Alpine Combined, Giant Slalom on a rolling flat run aptly named Kitzbuel. The Team Slalom and Night Slalom will be on the Steep and icy Giant run which according to the AASA Athletic Director has a similar profile the Hayfever Slalom run at Panorama Mountain Resort to put it into western context. In addition to on snow events athletes and staff from around the country will be attending several events including dinners, public bib draws, and other events in the Thunder Bay area.

Alberta Alpine will be sending 28 athletes, 14 men and 14 women supported by 5 staff to the event. Athletes have qualified from 7 different clubs from Alberta’s North and South Zones. Athletes will look to fly next week with half of the staff, while coaches drive the equipment out on a scenic tour across the prairies to Thunder Bay. When asked about the team Alberta Alpine Athletic Director Cam Stephen was excited saying “We have a really dynamic group of athletes and staff who are ready to go work hard, compete, and go after some big results. They have been well prepared by their team coaches and their has been some great racing at Mount Norquay and at Lake Louise. I don’t think they could be more confident then after racing speed on the world cup track at Lake Louise.”  Slalom and GS qualifications took place at Mount Norquay in early January, and Super G and a second GS race rounded out qualifying at Lake Louise this past weekend in U16 Provincial series.

From Alberta Alpine, congratulations to all athletes and families in qualifying!
