Sun Valley, ID – The US National Alpine Ski Championships wrapped up this past weekend in Sun Valley, Idaho. A surprising number of international racers showed up for the American race, including five Alberta Ski Team alumni, now skiing for US colleges. Representing Montana State University, Mia Henry placed well in both the SL (15th) and GS (22nd) and although teammate Jocelyn McCarthy didn’t finish the slalom she did place 35th in the GS. The ladies tech events were dominated by USA’s World Cup super star, Mikaela Shriffrin who won the ladies GS title and crushed the field winning the slalom title by a massive margin of 6.73 seconds.
Two of the three Alberta men in attendance also raced the US Super G Championships held on Thursday, March 24th. Jeff Bell of Montana State University placed a respectable 15th while Kevyn Read of Dartmouth College finished 18th. NorAm slalom and overall title champ, Erik Read of Denver University made a critical mistake early in the 1st run of Friday’s men’s slalom, hiked but managed only 25th for the day. Both Kevyn Read and Jeff Bell failed to finish both runs of the slalom. Saturday’s GS was a completely different story for the Alberta men with strong performances from Erik Read who took 3rd, Kevyn Read – 8th and Jeff Bell – 16th.
